GC ZURICH SIGNS CORBEANU AND LONWIJK

Grasshopper Club Zurich is pleased to announce the signing of winger Theo Corbeanu and centre-back Nigel Lonwijk. Both players join GC Zurich on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until summer 2024.

Corbeanu started in Toronto FC's youth set-up and moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the age of 16. He made a total of 58 appearances with the U18 and U21 teams of the English Premier League club. He scored 14 goals in the process. In 2021, he made his debut with the first team in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 21-year-old Canadian has spent the last two years on loan at various clubs. In the first half of last season, the 1.90 m tall attacking player played for Blackpool FC, with whom he scored 3 goals in 17 games in the Championship. Most recently he was loaned to Arminia Bielefeld in the 2nd Bundesliga, where he played 15 games since the end of January.

Nigel Lonwijk started his football career with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. In 2020, he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he initially played in the U18 side. Lonwijk then signed a new contract until the summer of 2025 and moved to Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard on loan. The 1.90m tall centre-back was then loaned out to EFL League One Plymouth Argyle for the 2022/23 season, where he made 41 appearances, with Plymouth ending the season as champions.

Sporting director Bernt Haas: "With Theo Corbeanu and Nigel Lonwijk, we are signing two physically strong and dynamic players. Theo can be used as an offensive player on both, the right and left wing. Despite his young age of 21, he has already gained considerable experience in various leagues. With Nigel, we have gained a strong addition to the defence. He brings great potential and a strong presence due to his size and pace. They will be an important addition to the squad with their technical skills. We are looking forward to the contributions of Theo and Nigel, as we engage in joint preparations for the exciting challenges that lie ahead."

GC Zurich is also delighted to extend a warm welcome back to Christian Marques, a former U16 player and the current centre-back and captain for Wolves U21. Together with Theo and Nigel, Christian will accompany the squad to the training camp in Crans Montana. This collaboration presents an exciting opportunity for Christian to demonstrate his exceptional skills and reignite his bond with GCZ as he takes time to make a decision on the next club for his career journey.

Additionally, we are delighted to welcome back Renat Dadashov, Amir Abrashi, and Ayumu Seko as they return from their international duties representing their respective national teams. Their presence and contribution will further enhance our team's depth and strengthen our squad.
