GRASSHOPPER CLUB ZÜRICH SIGNS AWER MABIL

The Australian international signs a two-year contract with the option of a one-year extension. The winger transfers to Zurich from La Liga club FC Càdiz.

The 27-year-old left-winger was born in Kenya and moved to Australia at the age of 10. In 2013 he marked his A-League debut with Adelaide United. Mabil has accumulated 31 appearances for Australia's senior national team, which includes his participation in the FIFA World Championship in Qatar and scored nine goals.

In 2015, he transitioned to Denmark’s first league at FC Midtjylland. In the play-off round of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League, Mabil secured his first Champions League goal, a momentous event that propelled Midtjylland into their first-ever Champions League appearance. After a year he  transferred to FC Càdiz and embarked later on a loan spell with Sparta Prague. Beyond his international presence, his career has been marked by a series of triumphs. With FC Midtjylland's he won the Danish Championship, while also winning the national Cup twice during his tenure. Moreover, his accomplishments extended to his tenure with Sparta Prague, where he secured the Czech championship. Grasshopper Club Zurich has now reached an agreement with FC Càdiz for his transfer to the Swiss record champion.

Sports Director Bernt Haas comments: “Awer brings us substantial experience gained both in Europe and on the international stage. He will complement the squad with a level of expertise, also with his speed and dribbling skills, all of which will be beneficial to the team."

Awer Mabil was named “2023 Young Australian of the Year”, recognising his humanitarian achievements. As a co-founder of the not-for-profit organization Barefoot to Boots, he is dedicated to advancing improved health, education, policies, and gender equality for refugees.

The new Hopper says: “I am very excited to join GC Zurich. I can’t wait to play with the team and hopefully celebrate victories with our fans.”

Grasshopper Club Zürich extends a warm welcome to Awer and is delighted to have him in the squad.
