Dirk Abels began his career in 2009 with PSV Eindhoven’s academy where he progressed through all the youth levels. In 2018 he made his debut for the first team during the Dutch Cup. In January 2019 Abels made a move to Sparta Rotterdam, where he won promotion to the Eredivisie Premier Division via play-offs in only six months. During his time at the club, he made an impressive 146 appearances and participated in the Conference League Playoffs four times. The Dutchman now joins Grasshopper Club Zurich on a free transfer.
Sports Director Bernt Haas says: "We are continuing to identify the right targets that fit our transfer strategy. With Dirk, we have another great addition for the defence, which will form a strong unit."
Head Coach Bruno Berner further adds, "With his experience playing in the Dutch first league and his versatility in defence, he offers more options in our line-up. I was also convinced by Dirk's determination and motivation to play for GC. It is crucial for us to have players with such a mindset on the team, clearly demonstrating their desire to be part of our club.»
