Grasshopper Club Zürich and Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed on the transfer of Hayao Kawabe, who will join Wolves on a three-and-a-half-year deal. The Japanese from Hiroshima will spend some weeks in Wolverhampton, for the club and its staff to see the player in action in their own environment. Hayao is expected to return to GC on loan to complete the second part of the season in Zurich.

After joining Grasshopper Club Zürich from Sanfrecce Hiroshima in July 2021, the 26-year-old midfielder played an impressive first half of the season in Zürich. In his 18 appearances for GC, Kawabe scored four goals and delivered three assists.

Due to the GBE criteria for signing International players, Kawabe is eligible to sign for a British club this month, but may not be in the future, which is why the deal was finalised during this transfer window.

Technical Director Seyi Olofinjana said: “Kawabe has adapted surprisingly fast to Swiss Football and integrated very well into the team after arriving from Japan in July. He has significantly developed under coach Contini and has played a key role in the team’s progress. The fact that Wolves decided to sign him is a further proof of the qualities that Kawabe holds. We are looking forward to having him back in Zürich later this month to prepare for the second half of the season together.”

The Grasshopper Club Zürich wishes all the best to Hayao Kawabe for the coming weeks at Wolves and is looking forward to welcoming him back to Zürich soon.
