GC CONDEMNS THE ABORTION OF THE AWAY MATCH IN LUCERNE CAUSED BY ITS OWN FAN GROUPS
Grasshopper Club Zurich condemns the abortion of the away match in Lucerne caused by its own fan groups
For the second time within a couple of weeks, one of our matches had to be aborted due to rioting fans. That is shameful and simply unacceptable. Putting the audience, stadium staff and players at risk will not be accepted by Grasshopper Club Zurich. This is how rioters destroy the beautiful game. They have once again prevent the orderly procedures of a league match and thereby harmed both Grasshopper Club Zurich and the home side FC Lucerne.
Grasshopper Club Zurich understand the frustration over the team's performance on the pitch. The club once again strongly condemns acts of violence and lack of sportsmanship resulting in matches being aborted. Grasshopper Club Zurich does not want any rioters and has no tolerance for a lack of sportsmanship at league matches. The new club management has again emphasised that it wants and maintains a close relationship with fan groups. Rioters, however, are not fans.
Since there was a risk of the situation escalating, we decided in coordination with the security services to hand the jerseys over to the stands. The security of the players and the peaceful fans in the stadium is the utmost priority. The decision does not mean that we condone such unsporting and dubious conduct.
Grasshopper Club Zurich is calling on the judiciary, the police and the SFV and the league to also reconsider their approach. Imposing fines and sanctions on clubs is not enough. The football clubs – and this is something that does not affect Grasshopper Club Zurich alone in Switzerland – must not be left to their devices in this situation.
